S.A.Robotics recently won the contract with Brookhaven Science Associates for the turnkey decommissioning of the Brookhaven Graphite Research Reactor. This reactor was used for medical research starting in the 1960s. The reactor is made up of 64,000 blocks of graphite cocooned in a 4-foot-thick concrete/steel bioshield. S.A.Robotics is the prime contractor with ECC, Burns & Roe, and Babcock Services to completely decommission the graphite reactor on an accelerated 18-month schedule.

S.A.Robotics is responsible for the following:

S.A.Robotic 3D Representation of Project Containment

  • Project Management
  • Specialized Remote Tooling (Manipulators, Containments, Waste Systems)
  • Removal of Graphite Core
  • Waste Packaging
  • Demolition of 4’ thick bioshield
  • Final Building Decontamination

Success on this project will define us as significant trend setters for the nuclear industry because there are numerous graphite moderated reactors all over the world. This trend will showcase how efficiently a graphite reactor can be decommissioned when innovation meets strong project delivery. The decommissioning of graphite reactors involves unique technologies that have been developed, owned, and operated by S.A.Robotics. These technologies will add in the successful completion of the decommissioning of the Brookhaven Graphite Research Reactor.
